HARLAN -- Since falling one point short in the 2013 state championship game, the Harlan Community girls basketball team has simply taken ownership of the Class 4-A realm, posting 52 straight victories and earning back-to-back state titles. Expectations won’t be scaled back much this winter for the third-ranked Cyclones, but the make-up of the team certainly has a new dynamic as they prepare for Tuesday night’s 2015-16 season opener vs.
HARLAN -- Jordyn Moser led three Harlan Community players in double figures with 19 points as the Cyclone girls topped Sioux City Bishop Heelan, 62-49, in the annual Hall of Pride Scrimmage here Tuesday night. HCHS, ranked third in Class 4-A to start the season, built a 28-15 halftime lead on the 9th-ranked Crusaders and made it stand the rest of the way.
DES MOINES -- Three area players were named first-team All-State and five more were also honored when the Iowa Newspaper Association released its 2015 All-State Football teams Wednesday. HARLAN -- Mitch Osborn has coached many talented basketball players in 19 years at Harlan Community, but few have matched the versatility of current Cyclone senior Kyle Juhl. Armed with tremendous three-point shooting touch and a smooth mid-range jumper off the dribble, the 6-foot-5 Juhl can also finish at the rim or post up smaller defenders on the low block. He played all five positions for last year’s 17-6 Cyclone squad, averaging a double
HARLAN -- It only took one summer camp and an unofficial visit for Taylor Frederick to realize Vermillion, South Dakota was the right place for her. Frederick, a senior at Harlan Community High School, signed her national letter of intent last Wednesday (Nov.
HARLAN -- Watch Logan Schaben play for very long on the softball diamond and it’s easy to envision her skill set transferring from high school to the Division I level of the NCAA. • Fluid swing and bat speed - check. • Instincts and range in the field - check. • Rocket arm - check. Iowa State University saw all those things in Schaben at an early age, coaxing Harlan Community’s shortstop to make a verbal commitment during the spring of her so
CEDAR RAPIDS -- For the last two years, Harlan Community’s volleyball and girls basketball teams have established a minor monopoly on Class 4-A state championships, showing incredible will to win while claiming back-to-back titles in both sports. The Cyclone dynasty hit a speed bump on Friday, but many of the same players who have won so often with dignity and class exhibited similar levels of grace and character in defeat. HCHS simply lost t
CEDAR RAPIDS -- By the time it was over, Bishop Heelan coach Mary Miller had seen enough. Despite their best efforts, including a victory in set one, the Crusaders were unable to slow down Harlan Community senior Taylor Frederick long enough to pull the upset in Thursday’s Class 4-A State Volleyball Tournament semifinal match. Frederick opened and closed each of the last three sets with a kill to lead the 2nd-ranked Cyclones past the 8th-rank
CEDAR RAPIDS -- Perhaps it’s a sign of things to come later this week, or simply a validation of why the Harlan Community volleyball team is back at state for a fifth straight year to begin with. This much is certain: there have been more experienced, state champion Harlan teams with more firepower that did not play as composed and business-like in their state opener as the 2015 Cyclones did Tuesday inside the US Cellular Center. Trailing onl
CEDAR RAPIDS -- Janelle Sears of Westphalia was recognized prior to Harlan Community’s first round state volleyball match Tuesday as the school’s recipient of the Iowa Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award.
