Boys Tennis loses matchup to Glenwood

It was another rough day for the Harlan boys as they lost to the Glenwood Rams at the tennis courts by a final of 9-0. Despite the tough loss, head coach Dillon Stane feels as if the team is improving and becoming more comfortable when playing.
“I thought we had a lot more net play today,” Stane said. “A couple guys seemed to feel more comfortable up at the net, so I was really happy with how they responded today with that.”

Girls Tennis defeated by Kuemper Catholic

On Monday night, the Harlan tennis girls were on the road taking on Kuemper Catholic and were defeated 8-1. The wind was fierce and the temperature was low, however head tennis coach Katie Arentson was pleased with the overall performance.

It was a rough day for the Harlan boys tennis team with fierce winds affecting their performance as they dropped their matchup to Kuemper Catholic 9-0. Head coach Dillon Stane was still proud of their efforts despite a tough day on the courts.
“They played relatively well today,” Stane said. “There was a lot of competitive matches. It’s not going to reflect in the scorebook, but there was a lot of times they were going to deuce.”

Fah, Ferguson recognized at the Dome

 CEDAR FALLS -- Prior to the semifinal round of the Iowa high school football playoffs, each participating school was asked to select one teacher and one military veteran to be honored during their team’s game at the UNI-Dome. Harlan Community High School chemistry teacher Jeff J. Fah was selected as the teacher and Neil Ferguson of rural Earling was recognized for his military service on Saturday, November 13.

C-A-M’s quick start dooms Lady Vike basketball team

 ANITA (Nov. 23) -- Cumberland-Anita-Massena opened the game on a 20-8 run and had three players score in double-figures in a 66-37 victory over A-H-S-T-W in Anita Tuesday night. Eva Steffensen led three Cougars in double figures with 16 points.

Cyclone lineman Schmitz wins 3A Hog of the Game award

 CLIVE -- Harlan Community junior left tackle Gunner Schmitz was one of seven Iowa high school football players who took home awards recognizing their play during the 2021 Iowa high school state football championships Nov. 18-19 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Hog of the Game (HOG) awards went to the outstanding offensive lineman, including Schmitz, in each of the championship games.

Miller breaks school record at state

 MARSHALLTOWN -- Harlan Community junior Aurora Miller broke her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke while competing for Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in the 2021 Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet held November 12-13 at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA. Miller and HCHS junior Elaina Vrchoticky both competed in one individual state event as well as one relay for the Lynx after qualifying through regionals on November 6. Miller entered

HCSD Special Olympics athletes resume competition

 REGIONAL -- Special Olympics athletes from all over the state participated in bowling events during the month of October. As Special Olympics Iowa is just now resuming activities after a long break due to COVID-19, bowlers were not placed in brackets or awarded placements, but each athlete was given a participation award.
