 COON RAPIDS (Oct. 15) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton took care of business on its end and received the help it needed last Friday night, qualifying for the Eight-Player football playoffs with a 52-15 win at Coon Rapids-Bayard. The Spartans finished the regular season at 5-3 overall and 3-3 in District 10, clinching a third-place playoff spot based on its head-to-head win over Boyer Valley the previous week.

 HULL (Oct. 9) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team lost to four state-ranked opponents and finished with an 0-5 record in last Saturday’s Kooima-Kooima-Varilek Classic at Hull. The host Western Christian Wolfpack, ranked fifth in Class 2A, won the tournament with a 6-0 record, defeating No. 8 (3A) Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the championship match, 21-11, 21-18. HCHS lost all of its pool-play matches and recorded just one set win on the day.

Wolves clinch playoff spot as Rasmussen runs for 306

 LAWTON (Oct. 8) -- Amos Rasmussen rushed for 306 yards and three touchdowns last Friday night, leading IKM-Manning past Lawton-Bronson 48-27 in a Class A, District 8 football game featuring 870 yards of total offense. The victory allowed IKM-M to clinch third place in the district - and a playoff spot - going into this Friday’s regular season finale at Ogden (a non-district game).

 ELK HORN (Oct. 7) -- Poor starts in the first two games set the tone for an 0-3 loss Thursday night as the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton volleyball team was swept by Woodbine 15-25, 15-25, 15-25. The visiting Tigers raced out to a 12-1 lead in set one and a 7-1 lead in set two.

Petersen tops 500 passing yards in big Spartan win

 EXIRA (Oct. 8) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton kept its playoff hopes alive Friday night with a thrilling 50-47 home win over Boyer Valley. The Spartans were led by quarterback Trey Petersen’s 509 passing yards, four touchdown passes and three TD runs as the team improved to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in 8-Player, District 10. Boyer Valley dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the district. Exira-EHK can earn a playoff spot Friday (Oct.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (Oct. 5) -- It was another tough night in the win-loss column, but Harlan Community may have found something to build on during the late stages of Tuesday’s Hawkeye Ten volleyball triangular at St. Albert. The Cyclones were swept by the eighth-ranked (1A) Saintes in the opening match 15-25, 22-25, 15-25, then lost to fifth-ranked (4A) Glenwood 15-25, 15-25, 21-25.

HCHS expects tougher test from No. 9 Tigers

 ADEL (Oct. 8) -- Friday night’s matchup between Harlan Community and Adel-DeSoto-Minburn is most likely the de facto championship game in Class 3A, District 6. The top-ranked Cyclones enter the contest at 6-0 overall and 2-0 in district play following one-sided wins over Saydel (64-0) and Atlantic (55-7) in which they scored 99 first-half points. The level of competition goes up a few notches this week against ninth-ranked ADM (5-1, 2-0).

Lady Vikes finish WIC play with two home wins

 AVOCA (Oct. 5) -- The AHSTW volleyball team closed out regular-season play with a pair of Western Iowa Conference home wins earlier this week, rallying past Logan-Magnolia in five Monday night and sweeping Audubon 3-0 on Tuesday. The Lady Vikes’ second and third straight WIC wins improved their record to 23-7 overall and 4-4 in league play going into the WIC Tournament (Oct.
