 OAKLAND (Feb. 6) -- AHSTW juniors Garrison Gettler and Hayden Fischer kept their seasons alive on Saturday by placing first or second in the Class 1A, Sectional 13 Wrestling Tournament held at Riverside High School. Gettler (30-5) was the sectional champion at 160 pounds after outlasting Cole Lange of Missouri Valley 6-4 in the finals. Fischer (20-7) was the 132-pound runner-up to Underwood’s Gable Porter.

 ELK HORN (Feb. 5) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton girls put an exclamation point on another Rolling Valley Conference championship here Friday night, beating CAM 74-53 to improve to 19-0 overall and 15-0 in the RVC. The fifth-ranked Spartans closed out the regular season at Boyer Valley Monday and will then turn their attention toward Class 1A regional play.  OAKLAND -- AHSTW senior Claire Denning surpassed 1,000 career points during the Lady Vikes’ 65-19 win at Riverside on January 30. Denning hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points in the victory. Claire Harris also made four treys and scored 17 points while Kailey Jones tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds.  HARLAN (Jan. 28) -- The Harlan Community boys and girls bowling teams each rolled their top grand totals of the season last Thursday to sweep a Senior Night dual vs. Clarinda at Cyclone Lanes. The HCHS boys surpassed their previous season-best score by 164 pins, improving to 4-7 overall with a 2,530-2,371 victory. All six Cyclone bowlers rolled a two-game series of 300 or better, led by senior Brennon Munch’s 379 (200-179).

 AVOCA (Jan. 29) -- The AHSTW basketball teams won by lopsided scores in Friday night’s girl-boy doubleheader vs. Missouri Valley. The girls prevailed 54-9 in the first game of the night before the boys won 75-43. The Lady Vikes (12-5) were led by Kailey Jones’ 14 points and 14 rebounds while Claire Denning had 13 points and seven steals.

 HARLAN (Jan. 28) -- The Harlan Community wrestlers completed their regular dual season Thursday with a Senior Night split against Creston/Orient-Macksburg and Lewis Central. Creston/O-M won the meet by defeating LC 81-0 and beating HCHS 55-19. The Cyclones finished the night with a 66-3 victory over the short-handed Titans. HCHS (15-7 overall) tied Atlantic for fourth place in the Hawkeye Ten dual standings at 7-3.

 IDA GROVE (Jan. 21) -- The Harlan Community girls bowling team used a Baker games rally to defeat OABCIG by 18 pins last Thursday while the Cyclone boys lost their dual to the Falcons by a margin of 345. HCHS won the girls meet 2,341 to 2,323 despite OABCIG boasting the top two individual scores of the day as Amber Hoefling rolled a 435 (244-191) and Kylee Dausel had a 342 (181-161).
