Every day for around 90 minutes, students bring their chosen instruments — trumpets, saxophones, guitars and more — to practice jazz music in various groups at Harlan Community High School.
Those consistent 90 minutes lead many times to championships at various festivals throughout the year and the jazz bands have many competitions ahead of them this semester.

 SHELBY — The cost of farm upkeep caused a lower account balance for Carstens 1880 Farmstead Inc.    Carstens 1880 Farmstead Inc. held its annual meeting Tuesday at the Shelby Community Building in Shelby.The 2022 Carstens Farm Days show netted $9,700. The gate was off around $2,300 from previous years because of rain on the Saturday show.

HARLAN — Nurses, EMTs, and paramedics are invited to attend the yearly EMS conference in Harlan Feb. 10-12 at the Therkildsen Center.    Attendees will take classes on trauma, burns, strokes, heart attacks, carbon monoxide emergencies, PTSD, shock and respiratory distress.

COUNTY -- Welcome the 2023 New Year’s Baby Naomi Elizabeth Kell, born Thursday, Jan. 5 at 5:25 p.m. at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. Naomi weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces. She is the daughter of Sarah and Connor Kell of Irwin.

HARLAN  — The Harlan Municipal Board of Trustees passed resolutions regarding the water facility at their regular board meeting on Dec. 22.    They set a date for a public hearing at the Jan.

HARLAN  —  The Harlan Community School District Board of Education heard presentations from FFA, Friends of Rachel, the Special Olympics and learned about the Masonic Lodge Teacher Awards at their regular board meeting Dec. 19.    They approved a progress payment to Denovo, Inc.

HARLAN — For many, there’s nothing like sitting under the bright lights at JJ Jensen Park and hearing the crack of baseball bats and cheers from the crowds in the summer months.    But those lights are wearing out. A $250,000 matching grant from Monogram Loves Kids Foundation is helping move forward a fundraising campaign to replace the lighting at JJ Jensen Park. Summer Nights and Ballpark Lights will bring Musco LED lights to the park.

HARLAN — Second-graders from Harlan Community Primary School trekked to visit various downtown Harlan businesses and learn about what it takes to run a business on Tuesday. Students rotated between the Harlan Community Library, Zander Ink, Dr. Jay’s, Bella Salon and Bauer’s Shoe Store.The students have been learning about the economy and career goals. The businesses helped students understand if they offered goods or services.

HARLAN — Over the past 27 years, countless families have spent time climbing and having fun on the Dream Playground at Pioneer Park.      Those same families may have noticed the playground becoming rough over the years.    The City of Harlan is spearheading the Dream Playground Re-Imagined project that will bring a new all-inclusive playground to replace the current one.
