HARLAN —  Songs rang out at the Harlan Community School District fall concert on Tuesday. Seventh and eighth-grade choir, bass choir, treble choir, concert choir and all state audition students performed various works.

HARLAN —     Eighty Harlan Community School first-graders went back in time to a one-room school house in Panama on Tuesday.
Betty Reinig and her husband, Ed, presented what it was like, what they had to do. The teacher had to get the stove going to heat it up and make sure everything was ready. She had eight grades in one room.
 

 SHELBY COUNTY ­— The Shelby County Board of Supervisors held the first of three public hearings regarding a zoning ordinance establishing setbacks for hazardous liquid pipelines.   Approximately 25 people attended the public hearing Tuesday, October 18, where the Board unanimously approved the first reading of Ordinance 2022-4.

PANAMA — The Dazzling Divas Relay For Life team is 28 members strong and is excited to host an evening of dueling pianos with Fun Pianos! on November 4 at St. Mary’s Hall in Panama.  Doors will open at 6:30 for the evening, with the show starting at 7:30. Tickets for the event are $25 per person, which includes snacks.  Drinks are also available for purchase.

 MANNING — A dedication ceremony was held for Iowa’s first “Charters of Freedom” display located in Manning Friday, October 14. The dedication, hosted by the city of Manning and Foundation Forward, Inc., celebrated the permanent display of replicas of The United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and The Bill of Rights.  The monument is located at the Hausbarn Heritage Park next to the Carroll County Freedom Rock. Participan

NISHNA BEND — Nearly 775 people were in attendance at the trick or treat event at Nishna Bend Campground on Saturday. Fresh Encounter Church served hot dogs, chips and cookies to attendees.
 

SHELBY COUNTY — Shelby County will soon be designated an official Home Base Iowa Community. The county joins over 70 counties in Iowa participating in the statewide program designed to assist Veterans.
Home Base Iowa connects Iowa businesses and qualified veterans and their spouses looking for career opportunities.

HARLAN — Myrtue Medical Center hosted an influenza and COVID-19 vaccine clinic Saturday. According to Lori Hoch, public health director, 133 vaccines were distributed.
 

SHELBY COUNTY — Students in Shelby County had the opportunity to learn about fire safety during Fire Prevention Week. Fifth-graders from Shelby County Catholic School learn about lifesaving equipment the from Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen. The Harlan Fire Department uses unique items in case someone is trapped in a grain bin, including an auger. Students at AHSTW Elementary School received training from the Walnut Fire Department.

The IKM-Manning Marching Wolves won top awards at the Urbandale Marching Invitational Oct. 1. They competed against four other 2A bands, taking first place and receiving the award for best color guard.

HARLAN — The Harlan Community Theatre will hold open auditions for Boeing Boeing, a mid-season production planned for early February 2023.Producer Megan Sorensen said, “This is the first time we have done a mid-season play (no music!) and the first time we’ve taken the show on the road.”There are two shows planned for the Therkildsen Center in Harlan; one performance will take place at the German Hausebarn in Manning; and one at the 4 County B

ELK HORN — It can get noisy, but joyful at the Kids in the Village Day Care. Some kids cry while others cheerfully play with the toy in their hand. Others get a bottle while another’s diaper is changed.

HARLAN — When the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was found in Harlan trees in February, the city had just over 330 ash trees in the right of way. Today that count stands at 270. The count of ash trees on private property is unknown.

AREA — October has arrived, and Shelby County is planning an array of Halloween and autumn activities for goblins of all ages.  • No Tricks, Just Treats  will be offered Saturday, October 15, 4 – 6 p.m. at  Nishna Bend Recreation Area, (1 mile east of Hwy 59 on River Avenue (between Harlan and Avoca).

HARLAN — Many gathered Thursday at The Grounds for a TeamMates pep rally.DeMoine Adams, TeamMates CEO, provide an introduction about the program that began 31 years ago. It was cofounded by Tom and Nancy Osborne.The program is in 192 school districts, serving more than 10,000 students and in five states.“We feel like we just got started,” Adams said.
