HARLAN — Every year Harlan Fire Department conducts a driver training course.“When you get firefighters that join our department, we have a wide variety of occupations that come along with it, some of them are truck drivers by trade,” said Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen.

HARLAN – Ten local organizations received foundation grants from the Monogram Foods Loves Kids Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Monogram Foods. A committee of team members at the Monogram Foods manufacturing facility in Harlan, IA divided a total of $60,000 between the charities.    Several of the recipients gathered Thursday to meet each other and share how their grants will help their organizations.

HARLAN — Time to get on your walking shoes.    The Healthiest State Annual Walk will be held on Wednesday. Since 2011, the Healthiest State Initiative has engaged hundreds of thousands of Iowans in schools, worksites and communities across the state to walk for 30 minutes.

    HARLAN — When Mitch Osborn looked back, three rows up to the right from the bench, he saw Cliff Tamm and his wife, Judy, supporting Harlan basketball.    Cliff Tamm, 88, died Sept. 24.    “They are great community members and always Harlan Cyclone fans.”    When Osborn was coaching his Elk Horn team, he said Tamm treated the Elk Horn team like his own.    “He was a very positive person, a positive coach and very likeable,” Osborn said.

    HARLAN — The Shelby County Planning and Zoning Commission heard feedback from community members about the CO2 pipelines at a public hearing Friday.

Will Epperly of Dunlap auctioned off his first calf at age 7 while sitting on his grandfather’s lap in Virginia where he grew up. Now, at 33, Epperly is this year’s  world champion auctioneer. After 12 years of competing for the title, Epperly received the title in June from the Livestock Marketing Association.Though it seems a lengthy endeavor, Epperly said he doesn’t regret the time it took.“It’s been so much fun these past 12 years.
