POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY – One fatality was reported after a train and semi accident that occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday near the intersection of 510 Street and Rosewood south of Walnut. Pottawattamie County Chief Deputy Jeff Theulen said the a 911 call came in about 2:30 p.m.

AMES — Chevron Corp. recently completed its purchase of Renewable Energy Group, (REG) a biodiesel and renewable diesel company based in Ames. The Ames location will serve as Chevron’s renewable fuel headquarters, and Kevin Lucke of Harlan has been named president of Chevron Renewable Energy Group. Lucke said with the purchase comes ambitious plans for growth.

HARLAN — A new leadership program will be available for Harlan Community High School students in the 2022-23 school year. The program, Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates (iJAG), will help students build skills to be successful in the classroom, in the workplace, and in life.
15-year-old Bella Muller is already shining on one of the biggest stages as she excels in weightlifting.
Muller has competed in multiple events including the USA Olympic Weightlifting Youth Nationals (held at her club in Carroll in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the USA Olympic Weightlifting Youth Nationals competition in Detroit in 2021, and the same competition this weekend in Las Vegas.
Bryce Schaben, R, has defeated former Harlan Mayor Mike Kolbe, R, 859-573 for the open Shelby County Supervisor seat.
Schaben said he was very pleased to win against such stiff competition.
“I knew it’d be tough beating Mike,” Schaben said. “He’s a quality guy and I hope he runs again because he’s a quality candidate.”

HARLAN — Over 20 artists will be featured during Art in the Park this Sunday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pioneer Park in Harlan.Interactive art activities will take place from noon - 3 p.m. GameTime Eats food truck will be selling Philly sandwiches throughout the event and music will be performed.Eileen Anderson of Ankeny will be the featured artist. HARLAN — Myrtue Medical Center invitied area children to go “Fishing for Fun” on Monday, May 9 at Nishna Bend Recreation Area. Children under 12 were able to attend the event with an adult. A boxed meal was provided for all participants and prizes were awarded.
COUNTY — Iowa Secretary of State Paul D. Pate visited with members of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry last Thursday to introduce area businesses to a statewide coalition to end human trafficking in Iowa. Iowa businesses are encouraged to visit IBAT.iowa.gov.
