Harlan Municipal Utilities CEO Joe Rueschenberg has released the following statement regarding a recent electric meter audit.

Five separate winners have been awarded prize money for their participation in the Harlan Newspapers first ever Newspaper BINGO contest.

What do you do if you have a hankering for Milk & Honey but live in Omaha?
Hop in a plane and get there in less than 30 minutes. That’s what Steve Jeub and Rich Walker did recently, and have made a habit of it.
“We have to fly somewhere,” Jeub said. “We'll go to Yankton or Topeka. Anywhere within an hour or hour and a half out of Millard Airport in Omaha."
Walker said he and Jeub met three years ago.

A familiar face has been seen around local polling places since the early 1970s. Agnes Wehr, 88, of Westphalia, has served in various capacities since her children were school-aged.

Q: What are you most looking forward to with working at IKM-Manning?
A: I am looking forward to meeting the students and my fellow teachers at IKM-Manning. I consider myself a people-person and look forward to the relationships that are created at school.
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?

            As we jump into a new school year at IKM-Manning, we’ve seen many new faces. One face that stands out in particular is Nuria Bachhofer, a foreign exchange student for the 2022-23 school year.
            Bachhofer is a senior and is from Stuttgart, Germany. She enjoys the fun, diverse atmosphere that IKM-Manning has to offer. She is currently residing with the Brian and Heather Reissen family.

 COUNTY — Students at the Harlan Community and Exira - Elk Horn - Kimballton Schools saw a familiar face when they began the school year, as Shelby County Sheriff’s Department Deputy RJ Bielenberg has resumed his role in both locations as the School Resource Officer.  The position is made possible by a partnership with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the schools, Myrtue Medical Center Behavioral Health, and Southwest Iowa Mental Health

 SHELBY COUNTY — Shelby County voters in the Harlan Community School District approved a $22.9 million bond issue in a special election held Tuesday, September 13. Unofficial results provided by Mark Maxwell, Shelby County Commissioner of Elections, show Proposition TD (the bond) passed with 1003 yes votes  (60.31%) to 660 no votes (39.69%). The second measure, Proposition TE (The Revenue Purpose Statement), passed by 1,104 yes (67.24%) to 538

For many people, the reason for donating blood is personal.
Terry Schulte of Westphalia, who has donated more than 40 pints of blood, got started giving blood when his son had leukemia.

The public is invited to celebrate the 30th year of Conductix-Wampfler in the Harlan community. An open house for the public will take place Sept. 23 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., which will include guided tours.

SHELBY COUNTY — Having completed both the “N” and the “I”,  the first $50 prizes were claimed in the Harlan Newspapers’ BINGO contest Thursday, Sept. 8.

SHELBY — Rain cancelled the parade Saturday, but the 40th Annual Carstens Farm Days still drew a crowd for the weekend event, held Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12.
Iowa Farm History was showcased at the Carstens 1880 Farmstead, featuring threshing, sawmill operators, crafters and vendors, and several tractors. 

The Greenridge Steam and Gas Engine Antique Show is returning for the 45th year on Sept. 17 and 18. Located 1 mile south, 1 mile west and 1 ½ miles south of Irwin, this year’s event includes entertainment for the whole family.
Henry and the Haymakers, a local country band, will perform a show on Sept. 18 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Harlan Community Schools senior Gabrielle Gaul was honored with the National Rural and Small Town Award through the College Board.
Gaul said she found out about the award through an email from the College Board notifying her of her eligibility to apply. Her GPA, PSAT score, and living in a small town are all qualifications that she met to be eligible for applying. 

The Harlan Community Library is encouraging people to read, as well as support the children of Ukraine through a unique program. The 30-day program is for anyone in the community who wants to participate of any age.
“The mindset is we are supporting Ukraine and the people of Ukraine,” said Emily Kurth-Christensen, youth services librarian. “We have packets for people to pick up or it’s on the website.”
