HARLAN — The City Council approved a resolution to partner with community stakeholders to develop a county-based ambulance service at the regular board meeting Tuesday.    Mayor Jay Christensen said there are a lot of pieces to this.“It’s a big puzzle,” he said.

SHELBY COUNTY — Michael Witt, an agronomist for the Iowa State Extension and Outreach, said the corn harvest this year is moving along at a fairly quickened pace.        “The reason for that has to do with the drought conditions. We’ve had basically no rain so they’ve had every day since September to get out and get the corn harvested,” he said. “They haven’t really had to wait any time for that.

HARLAN — Harlan residents will notice an increase in their water payment effective Dec. 1.    The Harlan Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees addressed the change during their regular board meeting Thursday.    “We continuously review department operations, the fiscal state of each utility and how we provide services overall to ensure efficient use of all physical and financial resources,” said CEO Joe Rueschenberg in a press release.

HARLAN — The Shelby County Mothers Group met Thursday at the Harlan Golf and Country Club for their annual luncheon and meeting. The event was organized by Kate Kohorst and Jan Goeser under the guidance of Prue Frederickson. The 2022 honorees were Nancy Boettger, Shelby County Mother of the Year and Jenna Hucka, Shelby County Young Mother of the Year.

HARLAN —Nearly 1,000 attended the 21st annual Harvest Fest on Saturday. Six hundred hot dogs were consumed in just over an hour. All 150 pumpkins in the pumpkin patch were decorated.    The movie “Surf’s Up” played on screens in the Harlan Theatre. Kids went on a candy walk around the square.    Hansen House Assisted Living and Memory Care Residence provided train rides for children.    There was also a costume contests for kids and pets.

Learning for Life held their Group Connection at the Harlan Community Library. There were 6 families that participated. It started out with a library tour, kids made a pumpkin craft, received color sheets and parent handouts. As they left each child got to pick a pumpkin donated by Harder Pumpkins from Avoca.

AREA ­— Sunday was a busy day for members of the Shelby County Emergency Management team fighting field fires in the area of Panama and Portsmouth, as well as in Harrison County between Mondamin and Magnolia.Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator Jordon Sanders said there were 12 departments helping fight the field fire in Harrison County.“We need to be aware of temperature and winds and what the forecast is doing,” he said.

ELK HORN —  The Elk Horn Library became a haunted library this week.Students from Exira-EHK Elementary School had the opportunity to walk through the haunted library Wednesday.
 

Jeweler and metalsmith Katie DuVal Mihelich, of Harlan, is the featured artist for the Forgotten Art…The Artists program Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Harlan.
Mihelich lives in Ames with her husband.
“Most of my work will be jewelry or wearable art,” she said. “I like to include unique stones and do pieces that are unique but can be worn every day, not just for special occasions.”

 SHELBY COUNTY —The Shelby County Board of Supervisors held the second of three public hearings regarding Ordinance 2022-4 Tuesday, October 25 at 10 a.m. at the C.G. Therkildsen Activity Center  in Harlan.

HARLAN — The Harlan Community Marching Band received a Division I rating for their performance at the state contest by the Iowa High School Music Association in Treynor on Oct. 13.“The bands who have marching programs are assigned to a particular site and are able to present their field show for adjudication and the results are in the form of ratings, with 1 as superior, 2 as excellent and 3 as a good rating,” director Bill Kearney said.

HARLAN —The 21st annual Harvest Fest will take place on Saturday.“The Harvest Fest committee is pleased we are able to bring back some Harvest Fest favorites this year, including cookie decorating.The lineup is also changed the line up this year. The $1 movie, “Surf’s Up”, will begin at 10 a.m. All other events are from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the candy walk around the square from 1-2 p.m.

FMCTC has announced that Jason Best has joined the company as their new Operations Manager, according to Tom Conry FMCTC’s CEO.

HARLAN — When Harlan Cyclones walked off the field at Kinnick Stadium on Nov. 18, 1972, they walked off champions in the very first Iowa High School Athletic Association playoffs.
