The HCHS Cyclones girls basketball team went into Lewis Central Tuesday night and took care of business, winning 55-44 over the Titans for their seventh win in a row.
“I thought we played tremendous defense,” said Cyclone Head Coach Zach Klaassen. “That kind of got us going. Offensively, we hit a couple of shots early, but defense was what carried us out of the gates.”

ELK-HORN - In the first quarter of Saturday’s home game, the Exira-EHK Spartans girls basketball team came out aggressively leading 21-2 at the end of the first quarter en route to a 57-42 victory over the Earldom Cardinals for their second consecutive win and fourth of the season.

Friday night at home, the IKM-Manning Wolves boys basketball team got off to a slow start trailing 8-0 against the Missouri Valley Big Reds, which led to a 59-47 loss for their fourth loss of the season.
“You’ve just got to keep pushing forward,” said Wolves Head Coach Keith Wagner. “There’s a lot of season left. You’ve got to keep working and trying to get better. Hopefully we respond next week and play good basketball.”

In their first game following the holiday break, the IKM-Manning girls basketball team opened Friday’s game with a 10-2 run in the first quarter, en route to a 44-23 victory over the Missouri Valley Lady Reds for their third win of the season.

After a close Thursday night road battle with the Denison Monarchs, the HCHS Cyclones boys basketball team beat the Clarinda Cardinals 65-49 handing them their second loss, and giving the Cyclones their fourth win of the season.

Less than 24 hours after a dominant victory over the Denison Monarchs, the HCHS girls basketball team returned to the court on the road against the Clarinda Cardinals and beat them soundly 53-22.

In the first quarter of Thursday’s road match against the Denison Monarchs with the HCHS Cyclones boys basketball leading by seven points, Junior Cyclone Dallas McDowell snagged a rebound, went for a turnaround fade away jump shot, putting his team up 12-3 en route to a 57-51 win.
“Anytime you get that second put back it’s big,” said Cyclone Head Coach Mitch Osborn of McDowell. “That was good to see.”

In their first game back from the holiday break, the HCHS Cyclones girls basketball team dominating Thursday’s road match with a 19-0 run with 12 of those points coming from Senior Grace Albertsen, cruising to their fifth consecutive victory overall over the Denison Monarchs 62-23.

The HCHS Cyclones boys wrestling team defeated Clarinda and Shenandoah in a triangular, beating Clarinda 60-18 and Shenandoah 39-37 to close out the first half of the season.
“I think everybody did really well,” said Cyclone Head Coach Adam Bendorf. “We’ve been practicing for about six or seven weeks now, and we’ve got about five or six weeks left, and I think the first half is going pretty well.”

The HCHS Cyclones girls wrestling team finished 10th with 54.5 points, 158.5 points behind the winner, Hinton, who won with 213 points at the Shenandoah Invitational.

Tuesday night at home, the HCHS Cyclones boys basketball team was locked into a back-and-forth affair, but in the end, the Glenwood Rams got the better of it, winning 74-67.

In the first quarter of Tuesday’s home game with the HCHS girls basketball team leading by just five points, the Cyclones closed out the first quarter on a 14-0 run which carried into the second quarter, easily cruising to a 82-32 victory over the Glenwood Rams, moving to 3-2 on the season.

Saturday at Riverside High School, the HCHS boys wrestling team finished seventh win 93 points, 115.5 points behind the winner, Riverside, who won with 208.5.
“Overall, I think everyone did really well,” said Cyclone Head Coach Adam Bendorf. “I’m seeing a lot of good stuff, and a lot of good fundamentals. There are little tweaks we need to make in some technique.”

For HCHS Freshman Sawyer Hudson and his sister, HCMS 7th grader, Georgia Hudson, the love for wrestling is a family thing. The duo are both Harlan wrestlers, with Georgia calling Sawyer her inspiration.
With Sawyer being a few years ahead of her, Georgia has found him to be her biggest influence, along with some professional figures.

The HCHS Cyclones boys basketball team’s offense couldn’t keep up with the Kuemper Catholic Knights Tuesday night at home, getting beat 90-61 for their first loss of the season.
“They’re phenomenal,” said Cyclone Head Coach Mitch Osborn. “They’re the real deal. We’re a work in progress, and we’re going to get better. I thought we had a lot of improvement offensively from the Shenandoah game to here.”
