 MARYVILLE, MO. -- Former Harlan Community High School student-athlete Derec Weyer is one of four transfers added to Northwest Missouri State’s 2020 football recruiting class announced Wednesday, February 5. Weyer, a 2019 graduate of HCHS, is the son of Tim and Kelli Miller and Shane and Melissa Weyer.

IHSAA releases 2020 football districts

 REGIONAL (Feb. 6) -- The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its 2020 football district assignments on Thursday and also announced that the number of playoff qualifiers will remain at 16 per class for at least one more year. Harlan Community will be part of Class 3A, District 9 next fall, competing against five of its regular football rivals.

HCHS outlasts Kuemper boys 73-66

 HARLAN (Feb. 4) -- The Kuemper Catholic boys did not resemble anything close to a 4-13 basketball team in their visit to Harlan Tuesday night. Falling behind 8-0 out of the gate, the Knights never did lead but pushed HCHS most of the way before the Cyclones finished off a 73-66 non-conference win to sweep the season series. Kuemper (4-13 overall, 3-6 Hawkeye Ten) knocked down 12-of-28 three-pointers to keep the game close.

Spartan boys win overtime game

 ELK HORN (Feb. 4) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys basketball team outlasted Ar-We-Va in overtime Tuesday night by the final score of 65-59. The Spartans outscored the Rockets 6-0 in OT and improved to 10-8 overall.

HCHS girls win by 18 at Atlantic

 ATLANTIC (Feb. 3) -- Claire Schmitz and Macie Leinen both posted a double-double Monday night to lead the Harlan Community girls to a 64-46 conference victory at Atlantic, strengthening the Cyclones’ hold on fourth place in the Hawkeye Ten. Leading 26-24 at halftime, HCHS opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run and maintained at least a seven-point lead the rest of the way, improving to 6-3 in league games and 10-8 overall.

Area wrestling teams ready for sectionals

 REGIONAL (Feb. 8) -- Area wrestlers will begin competing for state tournament berths on Saturday when Class 2A and 1A sectional tournaments are held across Iowa. Harlan Community will compete in the Class 2A, Sectional 4 meet at Glenwood.

Cyclone girls storm back on Creston, win by three

 CRESTON (Jan. 31) -- Trailing Creston 30-12 with a minute left in the first half last Friday, the Harlan Community girls basketball team had nowhere to go but up. Foul trouble, poor shooting and all-around misfortune plagued the Cyclones for much of the half, but time was still on their side.

Bendorf bags first Hawkeye Ten championship

 RED OAK (Feb. 1) -- The career of Harlan Community wrestler Carter Bendorf provides a perfect example of just how difficult and satisfying it is to become a Hawkeye Ten Conference champion. As a 145-pound freshman in 2017, Bendorf did not place at the conference meet.
