MANNING (Sept. 18) -- JJ Lander and Brady Wiggs scored short touchdown runs in the final 6:28 Friday night to lead West Monona past IKM-Manning 20-7 in a Class A, District 10 football game at Forman Field. The Wolves’ fourth consecutive loss to start the year puts them at 0-4 overall and 0-2 in district play. IKM-Manning trailed 6-0 for much of the way before putting together its only scoring drive (15 plays, 71 yards) in the third quarter.

 HARLAN (Sept. 17) -- After finding a way to win two highly-competitive sets vs. Atlantic Thursday night, the Harlan Community volleyball team took command in set three to finish off a 25-19, 25-21, 25-10 Senior Night sweep. The scrappy Trojans battled gamely in sets one and two but seemed to run out of gas in the third just as the Cyclones could do little wrong. HCHS raced out to an 18-4 lead, spiking 12 kills with no attack errors.

 STORM LAKE (Sept. 15) -- The Harlan Community girls claimed their fourth team title in five tries and Trey Gross earned his second individual win of the season at last Tuesday’s Storm Lake Cross Country Meet, held at Sunrise Pointe Golf Course. The Cyclone girls, who moved up one spot to fifth in last week’s Class 3A team ratings, placed five runners in the top 15 to post a first-place score of 38.

 HARLAN (Sept. 18) -- Friday night’s Homecoming game at Merrill Field matches two teams trending in opposite directions. Harlan Community is ranked third in Class 3A and sports a 3-0 record (1-0 in District 9) following hard-fought wins over state-ranked opponents Grinnell, Pella and Glenwood. Denison-Schleswig, meanwhile, is 0-3 overall and 0-1 in District 9.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (Sept. 12) -- The Harlan Community cross country girls placed five runners in the top nine to score a 31 and win the team crown at Saturday’s Lewis Central Invitational. Due to wet grounds at Iowa Western Community College, the meet was pushed back to 11 a.m.

 ROCKWELL CITY (Sept. 12) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team finished 2-2 and placed third out of five teams at the South Central Calhoun Master Blaster Tournament held Saturday. HCHS defeated both South Central Calhoun and Ridge View in straight sets (2-0) but lost three-setters to seventh-ranked (2A) East Sac County and Kuemper Catholic.

 MANNING (Sept. 11) -- The IKM-Manning football team put forth a strong defensive effort Friday night but was unable to put any points on the board in a 14-0 home loss to Woodbury Central. The Class A, District 10 opener saw the Wolves fall to 0-3 overall while the Wildcats improved to 2-1. Woodbury Central capped an 11-play, 72-yard drive midway through the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead on Jase Manker’s 16-yard pass to Beau Klingensmith.

 EXIRA (Sept. 11) -- In a high-scoring 8-Player, District 8 matchup of 0-2 teams, Glidden-Ralston topped Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton 57-34 here Friday night.
   Sophomore Trey Petersen had a good night throwing the football for the Spartans, completing 16-of-28 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns. He added 62 rushing yards and one score.

 MANNING (Sept. 10) -- First-year IKM-Manning volleyball coach McKaylie Croghan will exercise patience this fall as she guides a young Wolves’ squad looking to gain both confidence and skill level. Croghan’s team was poised for victory in two out of three sets here Thursday night, but ended up losing to Missouri Valley 10-25, 23-25, 24-26 in its Western Iowa Conference opener.
