IKM-M girls win first round regional; Anthofer, Jorgensen also advance

 AREA (May 13) -- IKM-Manning advanced as a team while Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton and AHSTW both qualified one individual for the next round at three separate girls regional golf tournaments on Monday. Placing three girls in the top six, IKM-M easily won the Class 1A, Region 2B meet at the Coon Rapids Country Club with an impressive score of 392.

HCHS girls golfers fall to Atlantic, set for regionals

 HARLAN (May 14) -- The Harlan Community girls golf team finished regular season play Tuesday with a 21-stroke loss to Atlantic (204-225) at the Harlan Golf and Country Club, putting their final dual record at 2-6. HCHS scores included a 52 by Kayla Powers, a 55 for Haley Manz and a 57 shot by Jocelyn Cheek.

HCHS boys finish sixth at 3A sectional golf

HCSD Special Olympics Bocce Ball event draws 74 students

 HARLAN -- On Wednesday, May 8, the Harlan Community School District Special Olympics held their first-ever Unified Champion School (UCS) event - a round robin style Bocce Ball Tournament - in the Harlan Primary School gym. The event was originally scheduled to be held outside on the school’s brand new bocce court, but rain forced the tournament indoors. Despite being a no-school day for the district, a total of 74 students participated and 20

Cyclone track squads increase state meet delegation

IKM-M boys win 1A state qualifying meet title

 GRISWOLD (May 10) -- The IKM-Manning boys earned a championship banner and the AHSTW girls placed second at Friday’s Class 1A State Qualifying Track Meet in Griswold. Together, the two area schools combined to qualify 27 entries for the State Track and Field Championships in Des Moines later this week (May 16-18). IKM-M ran away with the boys team title, scoring 145 points and qualifying for state in 10 events.

Spartans, Wolves advance in 1A sectional golf

 REGIONAL (May 10) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton and IKM-Manning boys golf teams both advanced from sectionals to district play on Friday and will play again May 16-17 in an attempt to get back to the state meet. Exira-EHK placed first at the Logan-Missouri Valley Country Club with a team score of 330, led by medalist Ev Carroll’s 72.

Heithoff penalty kicks lift Cyclone boys past Eagles 2-1

 UNDERWOOD (May 6) -- Michael Heithoff’s second penalty kick of the game with just 1:14 to go broke a late tie and lifted Harlan Community past Underwood 2-1 in non-conference boys soccer action Monday night. A handball in the box call on Underwood set up Heithoff’s successful PK, which extended the Cyclones’ winning streak to five games and improved their record to 9-6.

Boys Soccer: HCHS tops Carroll 4-1

 HARLAN (May 2) -- Jordan Fink scored a pair of goals while Cole Kramer and Luis Mendoza both found the back of the net once as the Harlan Community boys handled Carroll 4-1 last Thursday at Merrill Field. HCHS led 2-0 at halftime and 3-0 early in the second half.

Cyclone girls move above .500 mark

 SHENANDOAH -- Led by a second-place finish in No. 1 doubles from Brock Bruns and Jonathan Cheek, Harlan Community came in eighth in the team standings of the Hawkeye Ten Conference Boys Tennis Tournament held April 29 in Shenandoah. Clarinda won a tight race for the team title with 24 points, followed by Atlantic with 23, Denison-Schleswig 21 and St.

Swanson earns first-team status at H-10 conference golf meet

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (May 6) -- Jay Swanson became the first Harlan Community boys golfer in five years to earn first team all-conference status Monday, placing sixth in the Hawkeye Ten Boys Golf Tournament at Council Bluffs’ Fox Run. Swanson carded 10 pars and two birdies over 18 holes, including a string of six straight pars to start his round.

Cheek medal paces HCHS girls golfers to 7th in H-10

 CLARINDA (May 6) -- Harlan Community sophomore Jocelyn Cheek won a three-way tiebreaker for 12th place to earn second team all-conference honors at Monday’s Hawkeye Ten Girls Golf Tournament. Cheek carded a round of 98 on the 18-hole Clarinda Country Club (par 69), leading the Cyclones to a seventh place team finish.

Ev Carroll’s 71 leads Spartans to RVC Golf title

 ATLANTIC (May 6) -- Led by Ev Carroll’s two-over-par round of 71 at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club, the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys golfers posted three of the top four scores to win the Rolling Valley Conference Tournament team title by 35 strokes over CAM here Monday. Ev Carroll won the individual RVC championship by five shots over CAM’s Ben Tibken, 71-76.
