SPENCER -- The Harlan Community boys shot an 18-hole score of 374 and finished 10th out of 12 teams at the Spencer Golf Invitational held April 15. Spencer won the meet by nine strokes over Clear Lake - 315 to 324 - while Webster City (334), Carroll (338) and Estherville-Lincoln Central (340) rounded out the top five.

 GRAND JUNCTION (April 15) -- Harlan Community was blanked 3-0 in boys soccer action at Greene County last Monday night, dropping the Cyclones to 4-5 overall and capping a very challenging stretch to start the season. Including a pair of weekend tournaments, HCHS played nine matches in a 19-day span between March 28 and April 15 - many against bigger schools and/or state-ranked foes.

 DENISON (April 15) -- Even with six contributors out of the lineup Monday night, the IKM-Manning boys track team had enough depth to place 25 entries in all 19 events and outscore host Denison-Schleswig 139-129 for a team title at the Ace Nelson Co-Ed Relays. The AHSTW and IKM-M girls also surpassed 100 points, placing second and third, respectively, behind Denison’s winning total of 176.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (April 16) -- Gold medals were hard to come by Tuesday night, but season-bests and PR’s were plentiful for the Harlan Community track teams at the Lewis Central Co-Ed Invitational. The Cyclone boys placed 14 times in just 12 of 19 events but still managed to finish second in the team standings with 80 points, trailing only Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s 128.5.

 HARLAN (April 16) -- Glenwood shot a team score of 166 at the Harlan Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, handing the Harlan Community boys a 16-stroke defeat (166-182) behind Ryan Leath’s two-over-par medalist round of 38 and 42’s from Eli Bales and Pierce Harrington. HCHS, now 1-2 in dual meets, was led by rounds of 44 from Mason Peters and Jacob Dotzler.

 NEOLA (April 16) -- AHSTW busted open a 1-1 tie with five goals in the last 22 minutes of the first half and went on to beat Tri-Center 8-1 in Western Iowa Conference boys soccer action here Tuesday night. Brayton Tuma scored a hat trick and Blake Osbahr had two goals for the Vikings (3-0), who return 15 seniors from last year’s Class 1A substate finalist. The match was tied 1-1 until the 19th minute following Tuma’s early goal for AHSTW and

 NEOLA (April 16) -- The AHSTW girls soccer team scored an early goal but was blanked by Tri-Center the rest of the way Tuesday in a 6-1 defeat. The Vikings dropped to 1-2 on the season while the Trojans improved to 4-3. Tri-Center took a 3-1 lead into halftime and quickly made it 4-1 on Miranda Ring’s header goal in the first 40 seconds of the second half.

 EARLHAM (April 13) -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team played two more matches that went to a penalty kick shootout last Saturday, going 1-1 and placing third at the Winterset Tournament held in Earlham. Both HCHS matches were scoreless through regulation. The Cyclones fell to 12th-ranked (2A) Gilbert 1-0 in the first round after losing the shootout 4-2. In the third-place match vs.

 HARLAN (April 8) -- The Harlan Community girls soccer team lost its season opener to Kuemper Catholic 3-1 last Monday at Merrill Field.

 HARLAN (April 9) -- The Harlan Community girls golfers improved their team score by 24 strokes from meet one to meet two, defeating Lewis Central 210-242 last Tuesday on a pleasant late afternoon at Harlan Golf and Country Club. Junior Haley Manz paced the Cyclones (1-1) with a medalist round of 49 vs. the Titans, highlighted by a par-birdie combo on the par-3 fifth hole and the par-5 sixth.

 HARLAN -- Denison-Schleswig defeated the Harlan Community boys tennis team 9-0 last Monday (April 8), dropping the Cyclones to 0-3 on the season. The closest match came at number one doubles, where the HCHS team of Brock Bruns and Jonathan Cheek lost 6-10 to Sean Moran and Colin Reis. Bruns also lost his No. 1 singles match vs. Moran, 5-10.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (April 9) -- Jay Swanson earned top medalist honors with a 39 but the Harlan Community boys golf team fell to 1-1 on the year following last Tuesday’s 163-179 loss at Lewis Central. Owen O’Brien of LC matched Swanson’s three-over-par 39 on the front nine of Fox Run Golf Course and was runner-up medalist based on a handicap hole tiebreaker.

 CARROLL (April 8) -- Cole Kramer’s successful penalty kick in the second round of a PK shootout proved to be the game winner last Monday night as the Harlan Community boys soccer team outlasted Kuemper Catholic 3-2 and improved to 2-0 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. HCHS rallied back twice in regulation to force a 2-2 tie, then played two scoreless overtime sessions before matching the Knights by making 4-of-5 tries in the first PK shootout.

 REGIONAL (April 14) -- Area track and field athletes have through Thursday night’s meets to improve their season-best performances in an effort to qualify for the 110th Drake Relays in Des Moines, April 25-27. As of Sunday night, local track teams were in position to qualify seven entries in six events for Drake, based on results posted to Quik Stats Iowa.
