HARLAN (April 25) -- The Harlan Community girls golf team finished one stroke away from a triangular sweep at the Harlan Golf and Country Club Thursday, losing to Clarinda by one stroke (217-218) and beating Denison-Schleswig (232) by 14 shots. The Cyclones did boast the top medalist in junior Haley Manz, who shot a steady round of 49 to edge runner-up Gracie Brown of Clarinda by one stroke.

 BREDA (April 26) -- While the scores kept on improving for the Harlan Community boys golf team last week, victory narrowly eluded the Cyclones in three consecutive dual meets on the road. HCHS opened the week by placing seventh out of nine teams at the Monarch Boys Invitational held April 22 on Denison’s Majestic Hills.

 TREYNOR (April 27) -- The AHSTW boys soccer team improved to 9-0 on Saturday with an impressive performance at the Western Iowa Shootout in Treynor. The Vikings beat Logan-Magnolia 9-0 in the first round, then shut out Underwood 4-0 before getting past Treynor 2-1 in the finals. Blake Osbahr, Brayton Tuma and Gabe Madsen all scored a three-goal hat trick in the win over Lo-Ma, which AHSTW led 7-0 at halftime.

 MISSOURI VALLEY (April 23) -- Harlan Community earned seven gold medals, improved three relay times and scored 164 points to win the team title at Tuesday’s Missouri Valley Lady Red Relays. The AHSTW girls also made a strong showing with three gold-medal performances and 79 points, placing fourth behind HCHS, Logan-Magnolia (105) and Denison-Schleswig (97).

 CARLISLE (April 23) -- The Harlan Community boys track team placed fourth with 85 points at Tuesday’s Carlisle Wildcat Relays, scoring 14 times in 13 of 19 events. Carlisle and Nevada led the field with five gold medals each, but it was Indianola winning the team title with 132 points.

 DENISON (April 22) -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team continued to struggle for offense Monday night in a 3-0 loss to a skilled, fast and deep Denison-Schleswig squad. The Monarchs led just 1-0 at halftime before taking control with two goals in the first 12 and a half minutes of the second half, improving to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. HCHS, which started 2-0 after outscoring Treynor and Lewis Central by a combin

 HARLAN (April 23) -- The Harlan Community girls played a more competitive brand of tennis during home meets earlier this week, but still suffered losses at the hands of Atlantic and St. Albert to fall to 0-7 on the year. The Trojans topped HCHS 6-3 Monday in what was the Cyclones’ closest dual this season.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- On Tuesday April 9, the Harlan Community Schools took 40 Special Olympics athletes to compete at the Southwest Area Spring Games for track and field at Iowa Western Community College. Each athlete participated in two events, choosing from the 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash, standing long jump, running long jump, softball throw, mini javelin and shot put.

 HARLAN (April 18) -- Glenwood scored three times in the first 13 minutes and was able to maintain at least a two-goal advantage the rest of the way here Thursday night, beating the Harlan Community girls soccer team 6-2. The Rams took 23 shots on goal compared to just four for HCHS, which dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference.

 MISSOURI VALLEY (April 16) -- The Harlan Community girls soccer team picked up its first two wins of the year in dominant fashion last week, winning 8-1 at Greene County Monday night and shutting out Missouri Valley 9-0 on Tuesday. Highlights included a hat trick by freshman Kaia Bieker at Greene County and two goals apiece for freshman Raegen Wicks and senior Lindsey Metzger at Mo. Valley.

 DES MOINES (April 21) -- Local athletes from Harlan Community and IKM-Manning have qualified five events for the 2019 Drake Relays in Des Moines. This year’s area qualifiers - three individual events and two relays - will compete Friday and Saturday (April 26-27) at Drake Stadium. IKM-Manning freshman Amos Rasmussen will lead things off Friday at 8:40 a.m. in the 100-meter dash prelims.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (April 18) -- Harlan Community won two events, scored 122.5 points and placed second to Abraham Lincoln at Thursday’s Council Bluffs AL/TJ Girls Track Invitational. The Lynx showed up big for their home meet, led by senior standout Darby Thomas winning four gold medals in the long jump, 100-meter dash, 200 dash and 100 hurdles.

 WAUKEE (April 18) -- Harlan Community placed at least once in all 14 events it entered Thursday night, scoring 84 points and finishing fifth out of eight teams in the “Class A” division of the Waukee Boys Track Invitational. Pella led the Class A standings with 124.5 points, followed by Carlisle (119), Norwalk (110) and Dallas Center-Grimes (103).
