 CRESTON (Oct 9) -- An eventful night in Creston ended with a varsity volleyball sweep for Harlan Community on Tuesday as the Cyclones wrapped up conference play with a 25-19, 25-20, 26-24 win over the Panthers. Play was delayed nearly 30 minutes during the freshmen game as a tornado warning in Union County forced both teams to take cover in the school’s safe room. A tornado reportedly touched down about one mile west of town.

 AURELIA (Oct. 5) -- The IKM-Manning football team kept its district title hopes alive last Friday night with a thrilling 20-19 overtime win at Alta-Aurelia. Tied 13-13 at the end of regulation, the Wolves scored first in overtime on Stephen Grimm’s three-yard run and Grant Stracke’s extra point. Logan McCoy then scored on an 11-yard TD run for the Warriors, who opted to go for two.

 AVOCA (Oct. 5) -- Gabe Pauley rushed for five touchdowns and 171 yards on just 11 carries and Blake Osbahr threw TD passes of 61 yards to Drake Partridge and 45 yards to Pauley as the 2nd-ranked AHSTW football team hammered winless Nodaway Valley in the rain last Friday night by a 50-0 score.  HULL (Oct. 6) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team finished with a match record of 3-3 and essentially placed sixth out of 11 teams at last Saturday’s Kooima/Kaemingk Tournament at Western Christian. HCHS placed third in Pool A with a 3-2 record before facing top-ranked (Class 4A) Sergeant Bluff-Luton, which placed third in Pool B.

 REGIONAL (Oct. 8) -- AHSTW and IKM-Manning are the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively, for this week’s Western Iowa Conference Volleyball Tournament. Both area teams went 4-4 during the WIC regular season, with AHSTW earning the seeding tiebreaker based on its head-to-head victory. First round and quarterfinal action took place Monday night and the WIC semifinals will be held Tuesday night in Logan.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (Oct. 5) -- It’s been a few years since the Harlan Community football team has faced a Class 3A foe from western Iowa like the one it will square off against tonight. Ranked second in the state by the Associated Press, Lewis Central has  defeated all six of its opponents, including No. 6 Sergeant Bluff-Luton, by at least 28 points and scored 52 or more the last four games, often approaching that number by halftime.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (Oct. 2) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team responded to one of its most lopsided losses of the year with one of its best wins Tuesday night, finishing with a Hawkeye Ten triangular split at St. Albert. The Cyclones were swept by the 9th-ranked (2A) Saintes in the first match of the day, falling 10-25, 11-25, 17-25, before bouncing back to sweep Glenwood a half hour later 25-13, 25-23, 25-17.  EXIRA (Sept. 28) -- The unbeaten Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton football team celebrated Homecoming last Friday night with a resounding 51-6 win over West Harrison, improving to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in 8-Player, District 8.

 HARLAN (Sept. 28) -- No one knew it at the time, but Preston Mulligan’s late-game touchdown pass to Johnathan Monson Friday night was more significant than being the final dagger in Harlan Community’s 42-12 win over Glenwood at Merrill Field. As it turns out, Mulligan’s fourth-and-10, 15-yard completion with 2:09 to go also put him in the school record books as the top single-game passer in Cyclone history.
