HCHS wrestlers dominate Glenwood quad

 GLENWOOD (Dec. 4) -- Harlan Community’s promising start to the 2018-19 wrestling season continued in earnest Tuesday night with a 3-0 showing and two conference victories at Glenwood. HCHS swept the quad with wins of 72-6 over Southwest Iowa (Sidney), 82-0 over St. Albert and 47-28 over the host Rams.  NEOLA (Dec. 4) -- The AHSTW girls basketball team never quite landed a knockout punch at Tri-Center Tuesday night, but still led nearly wire-to-wire in picking up its first conference victory of the season, 51-41, over the Trojans. Sophomore Claire Harris led the Lady Vikes with 20 points and Claire Denning added 10 - all in the first half - as they improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in Western Iowa Conference play.

 SHENANDOAH (Nov. 30) -- The Harlan Community boys basketball team pounded the ball inside early and was also effective in transition Friday night, building a 25-point first-half lead and opening the season with a 71-40 win at Shenandoah. Senior Brett Sears shot 9-of-12 from the field and led the Cyclones with 24 points in less than three quarters of play.

 ELK HORN (Nov. 30) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton stormed out to a 28-5 lead after one quarter and defeated Glidden-Ralston 81-31 Friday night in Rolling Valley Conference boys basketball action. Dakota Rold had a big game inside for the Spartans, shooting 11-of-15 from the field and finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Cole Burmeister with 14 points and Creighton Nelson 11.

Treynor girls spoil another Cyclone season opener

 TREYNOR (Nov. 26) -- For the third year in a row, the Harlan Community girls basketball season has begun with a double-digit loss to one of Class 2A’s state powers. Monday’s opener at Treynor was doomed early on as the second-ranked Cardinals answered Brecken Van Baale’s opening-minute three-pointer with 16 straight points and a resounding 35-5 run overall.

 COON RAPIDS (Nov. 27) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys basketball team opened the season with a 61-43 victory at Coon Rapids-Bayard Tuesday night, getting 18 points from Dakota Rold and 15 from Josh Pettepier, who knocked down three 3-pointers. The Spartan scoring column was rounded out by Cole Burmeister with eight points, Trey Nelson and Trever Schulz with seven each and Creighton Nelson with six.

Wolves fall to Audubon

 AUDUBON (Nov. 27) -- Already up 32-25 at the half, Audubon opened the third quarter with a 14-2 run and led by at least seven points the rest of the way to beat the IKM-Manning boys 76-62 here Tuesday night. The Wheelers improved to 1-1 overall (1-0 in Western Iowa Conference play) while the Wolves were playing their first game of the year. Alex Lingle hit 8-of-13 shots and led IKM-M with 21 points, including 12 in the third quarter.

Viking boys start off 1-1

 AVOCA (Nov. 27) -- Treynor outscored the AHSTW boys 44-21 during the second and third quarters Tuesday night, handing the Vikings a 67-47 home loss in Western Iowa Conference action. Ethan Hoepner led AHSTW with 10 points, followed by Blake Osbahr with nine, Clayton Akers eight, Brody Langer six and Sam Porter five. Treynor, which shot just 4-of-25 from three-point range, got 17 points and 14 rebounds from 6-foot-8 junior Jon Schwarte.

Town Team basketball season starts Dec. 5

 AREA -- Eight teams will be taking part in the 2018-2019 Town Team basketball league, with games scheduled on Wednesdays and Sundays from December 5 to January 30. This year’s teams include Portsmouth, Panama, Walnut, Harlan, Audubon, Manilla, Irwin and Earling. Community members are urged to come out and show their support. A complete season schedule is listed below. Two games will be held at two sites each night.
