 CLARINDA -- It wasn’t pretty from an offensive standpoint, according to head coach Mitch Osborn, but the Harlan Community boys were able to pull away late and win their fifth in a row Friday night with a 56-45 victory at Clarinda. HCHS led 25-22 at the half and just 36-35 after three quarters before outscoring the Cardinals 20-10 in the fourth.

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community girls basketball team broke open a 22-19 game early in the third quarter by outscoring Clarinda 36-9 the rest of the way Friday night, beating the Cardinals 58-28 in Hawkeye Ten Conference action. Nine girls broke into the scoring column for the Cyclones, who have responded to an 0-8 start by winning their last three games.

 ELK HORN (Jan. 8) -- Dakota Rold made school history on Tuesday night, becoming just the second Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys basketball player to surpass 1,000 career points in the Spartans’ 80-53 rout of Coon Rapids-Bayard. Rold, a 6-foot-7 senior post, reached his milestone in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 20 points and nine rebounds.

 SHENANDOAH -- Short two varsity wrestlers due to the stomach flu, Harlan Community managed to split a pair of duals at the Shenandoah quad Tuesday night, handling Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 57-21 before losing to 12th-ranked (1A) Underwood 47-24. The Eagles also defeated AL (59-7) and Shenandoah (70-6) to win the meet while AL beat the host Mustangs 52-18.

 AUDUBON -- Jaedan Rasmussen’s three-pin night highlighted AHSTW’s sweep of the Audubon quad meet Tuesday as the Vikings extended their dual winning streak to nine with decisive victories over Audubon (66-15), West Central Valley (61-15) and Southwest Valley (72-12). AHSTW finished 15-5 in contested matches and also received 19 total forfeits, improving its dual record to 11-3. Rasmussen was one of eight Viking wrestlers to go 3-0, pinning all

 AVOCA (Jan. 4) -- The AHSTW boys outscored Audubon 22-14 in the fourth quarter last Friday to win 71-65. Freshman Raydden Grobe hit 4-of-5 threes and led the Vikings with 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Sam Porter had 15 points and five assists, followed by Blake Osbahr with 11 points, Clayton Akers and Joey Cunningham eight each and Michael Mantell seven.

 AVOCA -- Claire Harris (16 points), Claire Denning (14) and Kinsey Scheffler (10) all scored in double digits to lead the AHSTW girls past Audubon 58-44 last Friday. Harris knocked down four 3-pointers in the game and Katie Anzalone, Kailey Jones and Kate Wise all had six points.

 WOODBINE (Jan. 4) -- Tatum Grubbs scored 16 points and Leslie Caniglia added 13 to lead the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton girls past Woodbine 54-30 last Friday night. The Spartans also won at ACGC 63-52 on Saturday and routed Coon Rapids-Bayard 65-27 on Tuesday night. Exira-EHK totaled 21 steals against Woodbine, led by Caniglia with six and Grubbs with four. Mollie Rasmussen drilled three 3-pointers for all nine of her points.

 CRESTON (Jan. 5) -- The Harlan Community bowling teams notched a girl/boy sweep at Creston last Saturday afternoon, improving their combined dual record to the .500 mark. The HCHS girls (3-2) won 2,145 to 2,013, outscoring the Panthers by 78 pins in the Baker games to pull away. Jayden Gessert led the Cyclones with a two-game set of 299, closely followed by Madison Horn’s 291 and Olivia Petersen’s 282.
