HCHS boys placed in Substate 8

 REGIONAL -- The Harlan Community boys basketball team will be grouped with several familiar opponents when the Class 3A, Substate 8 brackets are released in the coming weeks. The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its postseason assignments for Class 3A and 4A teams on January 25, placing the Cyclones in Substate 8 along with Atlantic, Carroll, Creston, Denison-Schleswig, Glenwood, Perry and Winterset.

HCHS bowlers top Nodaway Valley

 HARLAN (Jan. 28) -- The Harlan Community girls and boys bowling teams both won handily against visiting Nodaway Valley on Monday at Cyclone Lanes, marking the program’s first dual sweep since January 5. The HCHS girls improved to 6-2 on the season, outrolling the Wolverines 2,375 to 1,857.

Cyclone girls place second at Le Mars Bowling Tourney

 LE MARS (Jan. 26) -- The Harlan Community girls placed second and the boys took fourth in last Saturday’s Le Mars Bowling Tournament, both posting their season-best team scores at Sweet 16 Lanes. Le Mars swept the team titles on the day, including a 2,878 score by the girls, who were led by Kaitelin Konz’s first-place individual series of 407 (215-192).

Boys District Basketball: Vikings, Spartans, Wolves in same pod

 AREA -- The AHSTW, Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton and IKM-Manning boys basketball teams will each be bracketed in Class 1A, Substate 8 when postseason play begins next month. The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its boys basketball district pods January 18 for Class 1A and 2A teams. AHSTW (8-8) and Exira-EHK (13-2) will compete in District 15 while IKM-Manning (10-5) is part of District 16.

HCHS girls add game

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community girls basketball team has added a 21st game to the schedule and will now host Nodaway Valley on Thursday, January 31, in Harlan. The junior varsity will play first at 5:00 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30. Both teams were short one game on their schedule.

Jones’ big night leads Lady Vikes past Underwood

 UNDERWOOD (Jan. 21) -- Kailey Jones made 10-of-12 field goals, scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds Monday night to lead the AHSTW girls past Underwood 56-38. Jones, a 5’11” sophomore, became the fourth Lady Vike player this season to eclipse the 20-point mark in a game.

Viking boys split with Eagles, Panthers

 UNDERWOOD (Jan. 21) -- AHSTW saw its 24-20 halftime lead quickly turn into a 20-point loss Monday night as Underwood outscored the Vikings 38-14 in the second half to win 58-38 in Western Iowa Conference boys basketball action.

HCHS places fourth at Plattsmouth Invite

 PLATTSMOUTH, NEB. (Jan. 19) -- The Harlan Community wrestlers finished fourth out of 14 teams in a tough Plattsmouth Invitational last Saturday as runners-up Oscar Olmos and Derec Weyer led a group of 11 Cyclone place-winners. Millard South, one of four state-ranked Nebraska teams in the field (No. 2 in Class A), claimed five individual champions and won the team title with 252.5 points. Exira-EHK 81, West Harrison 45 MONDAMIN (Jan. 17) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton girls raced out to a 34-8 lead after one quarter and drained 10 three-pointers last Thursday night in an 81-45 road win over West Harrison. Freshman Macy Emgarten led four Spartans in double figures with 18 points and also blocked four shots.
