Vikings place fourth in weekend WIC tournaments

 AVOCA (Dec. 15) -- The AHSTW wrestling team hosted a pair of Western Iowa Conference meets last weekend, placing fourth in both the WIC Dual Tournament on Friday and Saturday’s traditional WIC Tournament. Defending state champion Gabe Pauley, ranked first in Class 1A at 182 pounds, was the Vikings’ lone conference champion Saturday after pinning all three of his opponents in the first period.

 AREA -- A Town Town Basketball Tournament is being organized for Saturday, January 19, with two locations - Irwin and Manilla. Contact Eric Fara (712-579-1672) or Doug Bissen (712-579-4462) to register a team. The entry fee is $150 and the cut off for registration is January 5. All players must be 18 years or older.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (Dec. 14) -- From a long-distance standpoint, Harlan Community outshot Lewis Central by a wide margin during Friday night’s Hawkeye Ten boys basketball game. HCHS connected on 12-of-21 three-pointers while LC was just 3-of-19.

HCHS wrestlers sweep H-10 foes at Shenandoah

 SHENANDOAH (Dec. 13) -- The Harlan Community wrestling team improved to 4-0 in Hawkeye Ten Conference duals (5-0 overall) Thursday night with a convincing double dual sweep at Shenandoah. HCHS defeated Clarinda 59-18 before taking down the host Mustangs 75-15.

Rold’s double-double lifts Spartans past Wolves

 MANNING (Dec. 15) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton bolted out of the gates with a 17-5 run, then turned to 6-foot-7 post Dakota Rold in the second half to hold off the IKM-Manning boys 66-50 in non-conference basketball action Saturday afternoon. Rold scored 19 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, making 13-of-16 shots (mostly from inside five feet) and grabbed 11 rebounds for good measure.

Cyclone bowlers fall to Lynx, Monarchs

 HARLAN (Dec. 13) -- The Harlan Community bowling teams both lost a pair of varsity dual meets last week against Abraham Lincoln Tuesday (at Council Bluffs) and home vs. Denison-Schleswig on Thursday. The Lynx defeated HCHS 2,569 to 2,323 in boys action and 2,254 to 1,987 in the girls dual.

Gorden part of Wildcats’ ninth rugby national title

 MARIETTA, GA. -- Wayne State College senior Alex Gorden holds the championship trophy after the Wildcats won their third straight Women’s NSCRO 15s National Championship in rugby and the program’s ninth title overall on December 2 in Marietta, Georgia. Wayne State is a member of USA College Rugby. Wayne State beat Minnesota State University-Moorhead 51-7 in the semifinals on Saturday, Dec.

Schaben signs with Central for softball

 HARLAN -- Harlan Community senior Morgan Schaben signed a national letter of intent November 16 to play softball at Central College in Pella.
