 UNDERWOOD (Oct. 16) -- Going into the fifth set of Tuesday’s Class 2A regional volleyball opener at Underwood, IKM-Manning was right where it wanted to be. The Wolves had just held on for a thrilling 27-25 win in set four to even the match and force a winner-take-all race to 15.

 AVOCA (Oct. 16) -- The AHSTW volleyball team opened postseason play with a sweep of West Central Valley here Tuesday night, winning 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 in a Class 2A, Region 3 contest. The Lady Vikes are now 26-10 overall and will play at 8th-ranked Treynor (30-7) in a regional quarterfinal match Monday, Oct. 22. They have faced the Cardinals just one time this year, losing in three competitive sets on September 18. AHSTW served 14 aces vs.

 COON RAPIDS (Oct. 16) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton volleyball team was swept by Coon Rapids-Bayard 20-25, 12-25, 15-25 in a Class 1A regional opener Tuesday night, finishing the season with a 3-25 match record. Statistical highlights for the Spartans included Leslie Caniglia with eight kills and six digs, Makaela Riley with six kills and six digs and Macy Emgarten’s three kills.

 GLENWOOD (Oct. 11) -- Harlan Community coach Doug Renkly already had space reserved on his art room wall for a photo of this year’s Cyclone girls cross country team. Now he gets to fill it. In a satisfying switch from this year’s season opener, the HCHS girls earned a Hawkeye Ten team championship by one point over Glenwood Thursday afternoon, winning the conference meet by a margin of 51-52 at Glenwood Lake Park.

 GLENWOOD (Oct. 11) -- A year ago at Clarinda, Harlan Community’s Trey Gross placed 26th as a freshman in the Hawkeye Ten Conference Cross Country Meet. Sometime after that day, a rededication to running was born and the results have been swift. On Thursday, Gross made history at Glenwood Lake Park, becoming just the second Cyclone boy to win an individual conference meet title.
