After dismantling the OABCIG Falcons in the opening round of the playoffs, the HCHS varsity softball team went on the road for their second playoff game against the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors, who jumped on them early and knocked them out of the playoffs by winning 10-0.
“We knew they had some strong hitters,” said HCHS Head Softball Coach Toshia Kasperbauer. “They came out swinging and put the ball in play.”

Senior Alex Monson got the ball for the HCHS varsity baseball team Friday night to begin its playoff run against the Carroll Tigers and was dominant, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out eight batters.
Despite beating the Tigers 16-2 on June 28, this time the Cyclones won 2-0.

Saturday in Audubon, the Harlan swim team will be competing in a conference meet after eight previous swim meets starting back on June 8.
“The thing I’m most excited about for this one would definitely be the amount of kids going,” said Harlan Swim Team Head Coach Levi Culp. “When I was in high school and even last season, I only had about 30 kids going to the conference meet and this year I have about 48.”

Wednesday night, the HCHS varsity softball team took on the OABCIG Falcons in their first playoff game of the season and beat them via the mercy rule, 11-1 in five innings. Junior Jenna Gessert got the ball for the Cyclones and struck out one batter, while allowing one run on five hits.

A night after their game was cancelled due to bad weather against the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs, the HCHS varsity baseball team came home Wednesday night to defeat the Council Bluffs Lincoln Lynx 2-1. The first five innings of the game were scoreless for both sides.

It was a hot day in Westphalia, but that didn’t stop hundreds of people from coming out to watch the Old Timers baseball game between the Westphalia Red Sox and the Omaha Storm Chasers. The Red Sox won 9-3 in seven innings played.
Former Major League pitcher Curt Kaufman who played for the California Angels and the New York Yankees during the early 80s got the ball to start the game for the Red Sox.

The HCHS varsity baseball team (21-7) took on the Underwood Eagles (20-2) at home on Friday and shut them down, 6-1.
Senior Alex Monson got the ball to start the game for the Cyclones. He pitched just one inning and gave up a run. Freshman Weston Reisz came in for the final six innings of the game, not allowing a run.

Junior Jenna Gessert got the ball to start game one of a doubleheader against the Clarinda Cardinals Thursday. She struck out seven batters and gave up six hits. The offense supported her with a few runs, and it was all she needed as the Cyclones won, 2-1.
“Jenna threw well,” said HCHS Head Softball Coach Toshia Kasperbauer. “She had them out on their front foot, so they were not able to get the line drives.”

Thursday at home, the HCHS varsity baseball team welcomed the Clarinda Cardinals into town who were riding a 2-game winning streak. The Cyclones put a stop to that as their bats came alive in game one and went on to win, 10-6.
Senior Joey Moser, sophomore Quinn Koesters and junior Austin Schumacher each had two hits in their game one victory over Clarinda.

The HCHS varsity baseball team won it’s fifth consecutive game Tuesday on the road against the Carroll Tigers and won 16-2 behind the arm of Freshman Hayden Soma who pitched five innings, striking out five batters.
“Hayden competes really well on the mound,” said HCHS Head Baseball Coach Heath Stein. “His pitch count got a little high, threw quite a few more balls than he wanted to, but he did a nice job for us last night.”

Tuesday night, the HCHS varsity softball team went on the road to Sioux City East to take on the Black Raiders and lost, 14-4.
Junior Jenna Gessert got the ball for the Cyclones as she pitched 5.1 innings and struck out one batter. She suffered the loss, but contributed to the offense with a hit on the night. Overall, the Cyclones came away with seven hits on the night.

The HCHS varsity baseball teams bats continued to stay hot as they welcomed the Shenandoah Mustangs to their field for a doubleheader and mercied them in both games. They won the first game 10-0 and the second game, 12-0.
“We kind of got a slow start in that first game, but guys starting putting together good at bats and good approaches and put some good swings on it,” said HCHS Head Baseball Coach Heath Stein.

With runners on second and third base in the top of the seventh inning for the Shenandoah Mustangs, the HCHS varsity softball team was hanging on to a 2-run lead, but managed to get out of it as senior Tianna Kasperbauer recorded the final out and the Cyclones hung on to win, 7-5.

Senior Ally Meyers of the AHSTW Vikings and sophomore Ella Richards of the IKM-Manning Wolves were locked into a pitchers duel going into the bottom of the third inning, but that changed when the Vikings bats came alive and ultimately won the game in the fifth inning via the mercy rule, 10-0.

The HCHS varsity softball team resumed a game they started against the Atlantic Trojans on June 7th that was cut short due to harsh weather conditions and hung on to win 2-1.
“It was a new day, so we had to make sure that we came in as focused as we were when we were in Atlantic,” said HCHS Head Softball Coach Toshia Kasperbauer. “I think the girls were ready to finish that game and they had to stay tough to finish it.”
