Elaina Vrchoticky, a senior at HCHS has signed a Letter of Intent to go swimming at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. following the conclusion of her high school days.

With a large crowd in attendance, along with several students at the AHSTW Vikings gymnasium cheering enthusiastically, the varsity volleyball team was hoping to come out and take it to the Treynor Cardinals, but unfortunately dropped three of the four games they played Thursday night.
The Vikings lost game one, 25-10; Came back to win the second game, 25-22; Then dropped the final two games by scores of 25-19 and 25-13.

Tuesday night, the IKM-Manning varsity volleyball team played two teams, one of which secured their first win of the season. That victory came against the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders, winning the first set 25-17 and the second set 25-14.
“It is always great to get a win under our belt,” said Head Coach McKaylie Croghan. “The girls played really well together last night. I was very proud of them.”

Sports often come down to doing the little things correctly, and so much comes down to every possession and every serve. That was certainly the case for the HCHS varsity volleyball team as the Cyclones took three of four matches against the Shenandoah Fillies Tuesday night.

Thursday at home, the HCHS varsity volleyball team went up against the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs and won all three games to even its overall record to 3-3.
However, they received some unfortunate news that one of their seniors, Lauren McLaughlin, is out for the remainder of the season due to tearing her ACL last weekend during a match against the Underwood Eagles.

Running is a sport of discipline and having the desire to push yourself outside your limits. It’s not for everyone, but those who pursue it are in a select group of people, regardless of age, who can compete at high levels and use those skills to be better in life. That certainly proved to be the case Thursday for one particular school.

Tuesday, the cross country teams of both the AHSTW Vikings and the IKM-Manning Wolves participated in the Logan Magnolia Cross Country Meet. Overall, it was a good day for both schools, but the Wolves stood out with seven medalists.

Running requires you to be in great physical shape and have the right mindset, along with having the willpower to push yourself beyond your limits and that certainly proved to be the case for the HCHS cross country team as they finished strong at the Glenwood Invitational.

Sports can be unpredictable and you never know what could happen or how the game can change at any given moment. Football often comes down to doing the little things accurately that can go a long way. That proved to be the case for the AHSTW Vikings on Friday night as they opened up their season against the IKM-Manning Wolves winning 32-0.

A few inches. A play here or there. A bounce of the ball.

Thursday’s battle of top ranked between Class 4A No. 1 Council Bluffs Lewis Central and Class 3A No. 1 Harlan – both defending state champions in their respective classes – was no different.

The HCHS varsity volleyball team looked to be in midseason form as they battled the Carroll Tigers at home Tuesday night during a scrimmage. Despite not keeping score, head coach Elle Crees was still pleased with the results she saw.

The HCHS swim team is set to begin their new season Aug. 30 at Sioux City West High School with a new face joining the team this season, as Stephenie Dale will be the new head coach.
“I am extremely excited to be a swim coach again,” Dale said. “It's been my favorite sport my whole life.”

Lucy Borkowski, a 2020 graduate of Harlan Community High School currently attends Dordt University recently participated in the University of Okoboji Triathlon and finished second in the women’s category with an overall time of 1:36:44, just two minutes behind the overall leader.

Monday night, the Exira-EHK varsity softball team went on the road to play the Southeast Warren Warhawks in the Class 1A-Region 3 Championship, but got shutout, 3-0.
“I told them they had a great season and they should be proud of what they accomplished,” said Exira-EHK Head Softball Coach Andrea Nulle. “We met up with a great team, competed, but unfortunately it didn’t end in our favor.”

Monday night at home, the HCHS varsity baseball team hosted the Glenwood Rams in their second playoff game. Braydon Ernst got the ball for the Cyclones, struck out four batters, but it wasn’t enough as they lost 5-4 and ended their season.
