HARLAN --  Most teachers or school staff say working with students yields many rewards, but there also are challenges every day.    The staff and faculty in the Harlan Community School District have strived to provide the best education for their students, as well as opportunities for involvement in a variety of extracurricular activities.    Stories of success from students in the school district and beyond can make that effort worthwhile

SHELBY -- Approximately 415 students from A-H-S-T, Harlan Community, Underwood, Tri-Center, Shelby County Catholic, Iowa School for the Deaf, M and M Academy in Council Bluffs, Mindful Learning Center in Council Bluffs and Home School from Omaha and Council Bluffs area traveled to Carstens Farm Friday for the annual Carstens Youth Day.    The students learned about old-time farming and got to try their hands at some of the exhibits at the farm

MANNING -- It’s homecoming week at IKM/Manning, and the homecoming court has been selected. 

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Robert and Wilma Jean Nicolaisen of Colorado Springs celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on September 1.    Their children and spouses are Dianne (Bruce) Cooper, Colorado Springs; Ren (Debbie) Nicolaisen, Littleton, CO; and Eileen (deceased) (Mark) Jensen, Colorado Springs. 

    HARLAN -- The family of Elmer Wageman is requesting a card shower for his 91st birthday on October 2. Elmer is a former Defiance resident and he resides at Elm Crest.    Cards will reach him if sent to 1913 18th Street, Harlan, IA 51537. 

    HARLAN -- Doug and Lora Kloewer of Harlan announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley to Taylor Schleis both of Harlan. Taylor is the son of Mike Schleis, Omaha, and Deb Reid, Harlan.    The couple plans to marry on October 3 at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan.

    OMAHA -- Abigail Bonta and Joshua Weisenborn both of Omaha will exchange marriage vows on October 10 at St. Roberts Bellarmine Parish in Omaha.        Abigail is the daughter of Jon Bonta and Jen Lydic both of North Platte, NE. Joshua is the son of Mike and Lori Weisenborn, Harlan. 

HARLAN -- Former Irwin residents Vernon and Della Holdsworth of Harlan marked their 69th wedding anniversary on September 4.

    PANAMA -- Bud and Shirley Chamberlain of Panama will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on September 26 beginning with a Mass at 5 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama followed by an open house at St. Mary’s Parish Hall.
