After three straight road wins and riding a 7-game win streak, the HCHS Cyclones girls basketball team returned home Friday night to take on the undefeated St. Albert Saintes losing 60-42 for their third loss of the season.

Thursday night, the HCHS Cyclones split their triangular losing their first match to Atlantic 59-17, but bounced back in their second match against Denison 58-18.
It was also Senior Night as Brody McKinley, Austin Spray, Spencer Fink, Jesse Jens, Manager Olivia Jens, and Cheerleaders Allisyn Ludwick, Dixi Ordonez, and Katherine Schwery were honored.

Despite low numbers for the HCHS Cyclones girls wrestling team, one Cyclone stood out in a big way. Senior Addison Obrecht won three matches during Thursday’s quad that featured Logan-Magnolia, Tri-Center, and Ridge View.

 ELK HORN — Tim Fredericksen has been caring for the Museum of Danish America (MODA) in Elk Horn since it opened in 1994. After decades of maintaining the building and grounds, Fredericksen has announced his retirement. “I started there right after it opened,” Fredericksen said.

 SHELBY COUNTY — The Shelby County Board of Supervisors began the new year with an organizational session January 2. Newly elected officials, Supervisors  Mike Kolbe and Charles Parkhurst and Auditor Taryn Knapp, took the oath of office for their positions. Bryce Schaben was elected Chairman of the Board and Charles Parkhurst will serve as Vice Chairman. Jay Ring was again appointed Weed Commissioner and Taryn Knapp  was named GIS Coordinator.

 STATEWIDE  — Iowa lawmakers will reconvene January 13 for the 2025 session, and the 91st Iowa General Assembly will bring new lawmakers to the Capitol.

HARLAN — In the early 1990’s, the Harlan Municipal Utilities (HMU) Board of Trustees began discussing a municipal telecommunications system. However, at the time, several hurdles stood in the way. In May 1995, residents of Harlan voted on two measures to establish broadband cable communications as a municipal utility, which passed, setting the stage for HMU to offer broadband cable and internet service.

The AHSTW Viking offense came storming out of the gate Tuesday night at home opening the game on a 9-2 run en route to a 66-55 victory over the IKM-Manning Wolves for their second win of the season.
“To be able to put one in the win column was big for us,” said Viking Head Coach G.G. Harris. “We’ve got guys that work really, really hard and are doing a lot of the right things. Tonight we were able to do it enough.”

Tuesday at home, the AHSTW Vikings got locked into a close battle with the IKM-Manning Wolves with the Wolves coming away victorious in the end, 46-45.
“I think we got stops when we needed to get our stops,” said Wolves Freshman Keagan Eischeid. “We all believed in each other, and I think when we needed offense we came out and did well.”
