HARLAN— Harlan Community School District was one of many schools across the United States and Canada recently involved in a cyberattack of the cloud-based educational software company PowerSchool. PowerSchool, which provides K-12 software to more than 18,000 schools to support some 60 million students in the United States, confirmed the breach in early January.

Saturday, the HCHS girls wrestling team came away with a 19th place finish out of 22 schools, finishing with 27 points, 169 behind the winner, Lewis Central.

Spartans Head Coach Tom Petersen called a timeout, and when play resumed, Fahn made a huge shot at the basket for a layup putting her team up 46-37. The Bulldogs managed to make a few more shots, but the Spartans hung on for their fifth consecutive win and 11th of the season.

The HCHS Cyclones went quiet to open the game Friday as the Blair Bears opened the game on a 9-0, which forced a timeout from Cyclone head coach Mitch Osborn. When play resumed, Junior Cyclone Dallas McDowell got the Cyclones their first points of the game, but the Bears continued to make shots going on another 8-2 run putting themselves up 17-12 en route to a 73-62 victory.

Midway through the second quarter of Friday’s home game with the HCHS Cyclones girls basketball team leading 24-22, Cyclone head coach Zach Klaassen called a timeout, and when play resumed, the Cyclone offense got going closing out the half on a 9-6 run with Senior Grace Albertsen getting layups and Sophomore Kenzley Bruck having a fade away shot that went off the backboard en route to a 63-48 victory.

Tuesday, the Cyclones boys wrestling team came away with three victories against Panorama 39-30, Colfax-Mingo 57-16, and CAM 56-12.
“All three schools were 1A schools,” said Cyclone Head Coach Adam Bendorf. “I think we’re only running with open weights. That goes a long way in duals, especially against 1A schools that typically don’t have a full lineup. I think we did well. A few of our wrestlers had some tough matches.”

DES MOINES — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds delivered her eighth Condition of the State address at the Iowa State Capitol Tuesday, January 14.

 SHELBY COUNTY — Iowans have until May 7 to obtain their REAL ID to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. At the end of 2024, 73.5% of Iowa driver’s licenses were REAL ID compliant. Shelby County Treasurer Carolyn Blum said 85.51% of Shelby Countians have switched to REAL ID. To check if a driver’s license is REAL ID, check the upper-right corner. If there is a gold star, it is a REAL ID.
