After the Shenandoah Early Bird event got postponed, the HCHS cross country team wasn’t fazed by it, coming in first place amongst the girls with 50 points, just seven ahead of Lewis Central, and the boys finishing fourth with 143 points.

Saturday in Harlan, the HCHS Cyclones volleyball team played six matches between Glenwood, Carroll, Treynor, Underwood, St. Albert, and Missouri Valley. Unfortunately, the Cyclones were only able to come away with just two wins against St. Albert (21-17 and 22-20) and Missouri Valley (21-6 and 21-15).
“Proud is an understatement,” said Cyclone Head Coach Elle Crees. “These girls worked so hard and played together.”

It didn’t take long for the Lewis Central Titan offense to get going, as with just under eight minutes remaining in the first quarter, on a 2nd and goal, Senior Titan Brody Patlan went for a 4-yard touchdown run and dive getting into the end zone, putting his team up 6-0, which was followed by the extra point from Junior Jimmy Scott.

In their third set of the night in their second game of volleyball, the Exira-EHK Spartans were tied with the Griswold Tigers at 14 points, needing to win by two, and were able to do so scoring the next two points, giving them their second win after defeating the Lenox Tigers in three sets in their first match of the night.

HARLAN — This year, professional development for Harlan Community School District looked different with a new program called Capturing Kids’ Hearts.For two days in the full week of their professional development, teachers became students, gaining tools for a program they will be implementing immediately at the start of the 2024-25 school year.

 HARLAN — Visitors and residents of Harlan are being welcomed to the city in two new ways. The City has replaced the entrance signs at the city limits on both the north and south sides of Highway 59. Harlan City Administrator Gene Gettys said the project had been in the planning process for several years.

Under the leadership of defensive coordinator and linebacker coach Sam Brummer, the Cyclones are expected to have a stellar year defensively starting with their season opener at Merrill Field Friday night against their rival, the Lewis Central Titans.
