After opening the season with two strong wins, the IKM-Manning Wolves volleyball team was back in action Thursday against the 7-9 Underwood Eagles as they struggled to defeat them losing sets one, two, and four (25-17, 25-17, and 25-20).

 HARLAN — Vanessa Martin, Harlan’s new Postmaster, was sworn in Tuesday, September 10. Martin transferred to the Harlan Post Office in January and accepted the Postmaster in April. Rich Foust, Manager of Post Office Operations, issued the oath of office to Martin. Foust and Martin worked together in Des Moines, and Martin said it was an honor to have him issue the oath.

 HARLAN — Harlan is even better than it was. Monday, Sept. 9, talented student artists from Harlan Community High School brought something extraordinary to our small town, using their creativity to leave a lasting mark across time, hearts, and streets! Nine students dedicated a full day of work to transform 6 foot by some 50 foot crosswalks of the Harlan Historic Downtown into a vibrant, fun art installation.

For the first time this season, the IKM-Manning Wolves volleyball team was on the court seeing some game action where they came away with two wins, one each against the Ar-We-Va Rockets and the Exira-EHK Spartans.

The HCHS Cyclones girls cross country team has placed first in three consecutive meets, most recently winning the Gary Meyer Invitational with 72 points, five ahead of Lewis Central and Sioux Center, who tied with 77 Tuesday at the Prairie Rose Golf Course in Brunsville.

The HCHS Cyclones football team will play its first road game of the season against the 0-2 Glenwood Rams Friday night. They are coming off two home games where they went 1-1. After taking a 31-10 season opener loss to Lewis Central, they returned the following week to dominate Denison 49-7.

In the third set of Monday’s road volleyball match leading 25-24, Cyclone Senior Aubrey Schwieso stepped up and delivered the final shot of the night, hitting the ball into the backcourt against the CAM Cougar defense, winning the set 26-24. The other two sets were won by scores of 27-25 and 25-12.

September 9th, the City of Shelby, notified the DNR Atlantic Field Office that it received a complaint about pink drinking water. City staff arrived at the plant to discover that two of the four well pumps did not turn on. Since the flow decreased drastically, potassium permanganate was overfed, causing the water to turn pink. The City immediately began working to remedy the issue.

    HARLAN – Myrtue Medical Center announces the addition of Nathalie Francis, MD, MPH, as a Family Practice Physician. Dr. Francis joins the Hospital medical staff who serve at Myrtue’s nationally recognized Top 20 and 5-Star Critical Access Hospital and medical clinic.
