Young bull moose spotted in Shelby County not that unusual, officials say

    COUNTY – Residents in Shelby County have reported seeing a wandering moose in the northern portion of the region.    Multiple reports have been received that a young male bull moose was spotted along Highway 59 and U. Ave., also called the Buck Grove Rd., near Goshorn Seed and Ag Supply, on Monday, Nov.

Supreme Court Justice Larson honored for service

    HARLAN -- Retired Iowa Supreme Court Justice Jerry Larson was honored last week as the longest serving justice in the history of the Iowa Supreme Court (1978-2008).    Larson (middle), of Harlan, was honored by Chief Justice Cady and the justices of the Iowa Supreme Court  during the court’s visit to Harlan Wednesday, Nov. 4.    The court convened at Harlan Community High School, and heard oral arguments in the case The State of Iowa vs.

Cooperative effort to keep CDL testing local under way

Public health funding increase approved

    HARLAN -- The Myrtue Medical Center Board of Trustees voted to approve a proposal for a new funding agreement increase with Shelby County for public health services.    MMC CEO Barry Jacobsen stated in the current three year period, MMC has been receiving $100,000 per year from the county.

Albert “Ty” Frederick, 91

    EARLING -- Albert “Ty” Joseph Frederick, 91, Earling, died November 11 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Earling with burial in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Earling.  Visitation is Friday, Nov. 13 from 3-8 p.m., with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at the church.  A wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

Ruth Linton, 96

    HARLAN -- Ruth Verlene Linton, 96, Harlan, died November 11 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services will be held Friday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 12 from 4-7 p.m.

Jan Theisen, 49

    JOHNSTON -- Jan R. Theisen, 49, Johnston, formerly of Elk Horn, died Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.    Services will be held Saturday, Nov.

Weddings - Cristina and Jason Friederich

    PHILIPPINES -- Cristina Balarosa and Jason Friederich exchanged marriage vows on September 8, 2015 in a sunset ceremony on the Boracay Beach in the Philippines. Two local ministers performed the double ring ceremony.    Parents of the couple are Larry and Charlene Friederich, Avoca; and Ricardo and Elizabeth Balarosa, Manila, Philippines. 

Birthday Milestones - Walter Murray

    IRWIN -- The family of Walter Murray is planning a celebration in honor of his 90th birthday. Family and friends are invited to attend the open house on Saturday, November 21 from 2-4 p.m. at the Irwin Community Building.    Walt’s family includes his wife, June Murray, Irwin; children and spouses: Ron and Carole Gaskill, North Liberty; Tom and Mary Gaskill, Tucson, AZ; and Dan and Tammy Murray, Harlan.
