Dillon Michael Wood, son of Herbert “Runk” and Jodi Nelson Wood, was born on June 12, 1995, in Atlantic, Iowa. He grew up alongside his younger brother, Dalton, and attended Walnut schools and eventually graduating from AHSTW High School with the Class of 2013.

Catherine May Kalal

Catherine “Cathy” May Kalal, age 90, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, in Olathe, Kansas.
Born on May 10, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, Cathy dedicated her life to caring for others, both professionally and personally. She will be remembered for her compassion, generosity, unwavering faith, and devotion to her family.

Mary Jane Gubbels

Mary Jane Gubbels was born on October 15, 1948, to Merrill Sr. and Marie (Erlbacher) Stolz in Harlan, Iowa. She grew up in Defiance, Iowa where she was baptized at St. Peter’s Catholic Church and graduated from St. Paul’s Catholic School.
On August 5, 1967, Mary Jane was united in marriage to Cletus Gubbels at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. They were blessed with two wonderful daughters, Amy and Julia.

Phyllis Sue Miller

Phyllis Sue (Petersen) Miller of Audubon, Iowa, was born at home on May 9, 1927, to Kie Magnus and Ina Gertrude (Kemp) Petersen in Jacksonville, Iowa, the oldest of four children. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 18, 2026, surrounded by family in her own home.

Bonita “Bonnie” Agnes Jacobs

Bonita Agnes Kimmen was born to Lawrence and Hilda (Schumacher) Kimmen on March 25, 1936, in Defiance, Iowa. As a child, she was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. She attended country school for a few years before transferring to St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance where she graduated with the class of 1954.

James “Jim” Joseph Dotzler

 Jim Joseph Dotzler was born to Donald and Janet (Buckhaus) Dotzler on June 16, 1965, in Harlan, Iowa. As a child, he was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. He attended Harlan Community High School, graduating with the Class of 1984. Following high school, Jim attended Iowa State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business in 1988.

Lea Ann (Hill) Vanden Boogaard, 67, of Harlan, Iowa, passed away on June 7, 2026. Born on April 30, 1959, Lea lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, creativity, and an unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Cyclones end strong week with 13-9 come from behind win over Carlisle

HARLAN — The Harlan Community Cyclones base-ball team experienced a little bit of everything over the past three games going 2-1 in that stretch and finishing the week overall 5-1.
The Cyclones opened the week by defeating Class 3A No. 7 Bishop Heelan Catholic 13-6, fell 12-0 to Hawkeye 10 Conference leader Lewis Central on Thursday, and ended the stretch Friday night with one of the most memorable wins of the season.
